USDA offers food safety tips in advance of this season's hurricanes

USDA offers food safety tips in advance of this season's hurricanes

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is urging residents of coastal states to plan ahead this hurricane season and minimize the potential for foodborne illness in the event of power outages, flooding, and other problems that could be associated with weather emergencies.

“As you prepare your home for hurricane season, remember to protect food from being exposed to contaminated water or unsafe storage temperatures in a power outage,” USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elisabeth Hagen said. “When it comes to emergencies of any kind, planning ahead is always the best strategy to help reduce the risk of foodborne illness.”

FSIS encourages those living in coastal areas to be prepared, particularly when it comes to ensuring access to safe food and water after weather emergencies. Families should have an emergency plan in place that includes food and water safety precautions.

Elmore County EMA looking into storm damage in Deatsville area

DEATSVILLE, AL (WSFA) - The Elmore County Emergency Management Agency says a large tree that fell on a mobile home in the Deatsville area is most likely the result of a microburst from Tuesday's scattered storms.

The damage was reported in the Pruitt Farm Road area of the county.

A microburst is a very localized column of sinking air that can produce straight-line winds that are similar to, but distinguishable from a tornado.

Only one home was affected in the incident and no injuries were reported.

Calling all tornado volunteers to return for a Remembrance Ceremony

ECLECTIC, AL (WSFA) - Organizers in Eclectic are calling all volunteers who helped with the rescue and clean-up efforts to return to the community for a remembrance ceremony to pay tribute to the lives lost on Middle Road following last year's tornadoes.

Survivors are hosting a big event on Friday, April 27 and they want to welcome back the thousands of people who helped in the area so they can thank them personally.

The ceremony is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. They ask that attendees park at the Madix Plant - they will then be transported to Middle Road. The ceremony will start with a candlelight walk down the path of the storm immediately followed by a vigil and a moment of silence. Entertainment will also be provided.

Blueberry Blossoms 3 weeks early this year

Blueberry Blossoms 3 weeks early this year

This year is starting out to be another new experience for us here at Barber Berry Farm in the wonderful world of fruit farming. Because of all the warm weather this winter, some of our earlier varieties of Rabbiteye blueberries think it's time to wake-up.  For the past 5 seasons, they usually didn't start blooming until around the end of February. Now that sounds pretty good, blueberries in April. However, for those same past 5 seasons, we have also experienced either a freeze or frost sometime around Easter, not to mention various times in February, which is a killing event for the tender blossoms. Hopefully, that won't be the case this year, but then again, this is Alabama where you can never tell what the weather is going to be like the next day!  Now, you can protect your blooming plants by covering them if you know there is going to be a frost or freeze that night.
