Huntingdon's Anthony named Defensive Player of the Game in All American Bowl

Huntingdon's Anthony named Defensive Player of the Game in All American Bowl

Huntingdon safety Keith Anthony stepped on to Mall of America Field on Saturday, appreciative of one more opportunity to play football.

Playing in the All American Bowl at the Metrodome, the Eclectic native tried to soak in the atmosphere with Huntingdon receivers Willie McDowell and Cody Pearcy. A few hours later, Anthony was being congratulated for being named Defensive Player of the Game for the Stripes team.

“This is big for me,” Anthony said. “It’s exciting and I really don’t know what to say. I’m glad I had this opportunity to represent my teammates and my school.”

For Anthony, the all-star experience has been a bit surreal. A month ago, Anthony did not know he would be playing in the all-star game. Although invitations had been sent out earlier in the season, Anthony did not receive his info packet. The snafu was not discovered until after Huntingdon’s football season ended.

“This was definitely a blessing,” Anthony said.

Huntingdon's Chappel earns All-American recognition

Huntingdon's Chappel earns All-American recognition

Defensive tackle D.J. Chappell stepped into a leadership role for the Huntingdon football team this season.

Chappell raised his level of play as a junior and became one of the Hawks’ leaders on the field and off. His success was recognized on Saturday with the release of the D3football.com All-American teams. Chappell was named honorable mention All-American and is the first Huntingdon football player to earn a position on the list.

“That is a great recognition,” Chappell said. “It’s big for me and it helps put our program’s name out there. We’ve got a lot of good players on this team and I couldn’t accomplish anything without my teammates. We’ve all worked hard to make each other better.”

Earlier this month, Chappell became the first Huntingdon player to earn first-team All-Region honors when he was named to D3football.com’s All-South Region Team.

“This is a great accomplishment for him,” Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said.

Alabama continues monitoring for chronic wasting disease

Alabama continues monitoring for chronic wasting disease

To date, deer in Alabama have avoided chronic wasting disease, and state wildlife officials want to keep it that way. To do this, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) is taking several measures to help prevent the disease from reaching the state.

Diagnostics to confirm the presence of CWD require collecting the skull and neck vertebra from adult age class hunter harvested white-tailed deer. WFF staff work with local clubs and deer processors to collect the necessary samples for CWD monitoring. A minimum of 300 samples have been collected annually statewide for the past 10 years. WFF staff expect to complete this hunting season’s collection and monitoring by Christmas. Collected samples are sent to the State Department of Agriculture diagnostic labs for testing and analysis.

CWD is a fatal disease affecting the central nervous system of deer and elk.
