The Alabama Tourism Department today released a new version of its food brochure as part of The Year of Alabama Food campaign. The brochure, 100 Dishes to eat in Alabama Before You Die, lists more than 30 new dishes.

Bessemer’s Bright Star Broiled Star Seafood Platter appears on the front cover of the printed brochure while the back cover shows plates of food from tourism’s Top 25 dishes. The publication is red with white lettering and white plates of food that represent Alabama’s culinary offerings.

The brochure highlights dishes at award-winning restaurants, historic diners, famous BBQ joints, farm-to-table, fresh Gulf seafood and home cooking.

Area chef competes on Iron Chef television show - Lake Martin Magazine

Springhouse Restaurant Executive Chef Rob McDaniel has had since July 2011 to get used to the idea of being on national television. And now, he’s finally ready for all the questions about his Iron Chef experience to be answered.

“I’ve gotten used to people asking me questions and me not being able to answer,” McDaniel said. “A lot of people know we went and competed, but that’s all we’ve been able to say.”

McDaniel was chosen to serve as sous chef for Chris Hastings, executive chef at Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, for an episode of the show Iron Chef America filmed in New York City last July.

As a native Prattvillian, I think it's important to point out that this "Preferred Community" hasn't always been the booming city it has become in the past several years.  I remember when there was nothing out east but cotton fields and a Christmas tree farm.  We've been incredibly limited with our dining options.  When I was kid going out to eat was heading to the Hot Bar at Wendy's - for those of you can remember that.  We're fortunate now though that many new spots have opened expanding the dining possibilities.
