This past weekend was a three-day adoption event and we are thrilled to announce that 36 of our pets found new homes!  Many thanks to our staff and volunteers who helped make this a most

successful adoption weekend.   Adoptions certainly make our day and

since we took almost 400 pets in last month our pets can use all the great adoptions they can get.

We do a lot of fund raising for our animals, but are

particularly humbled when others host events on our behalf.   We

recently received a most generous $1000 donation from the Order of the Cimarron as a result of their very successful ‘Running Trails for Wagging Tails’ event at Swayback Bridge Trails a few weeks ago.

This is Halloween week and while it is a lot of fun for is humans, pet costumes, scary people costumes, candy, trick or treaters, and parties all have special risks for our pets so we ask everyone to plan ahead to keep your pet(s) healthy and safe.

That big bowl of candy may be hard to resist for all of us, but can be quite dangerous to our pets! Chocolate can be toxic, candies containing the artificial sweetener Xylitol can cause problems, and just think of all of those candy wrappers & lollipop sticks that a pet might consume!   Please keep all candies safely out of reach of your pets and don’t leave Rover unattended with a big bowl of candy at the front door.

While the vast majority of our intake is dogs and cats, we do also receive the occasional small pet like Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, Hamsters, Mice, Rats, Gerbils, Birds, etc.  In most cases these pets were purchased to teach a child responsibility and are brought to us when the child has lost interest in the pet and is not taking care of it.  We have to wonder what kind of lesson is being taught to these children when the solution is ‘getting rid of’ that pet?  Of course, we would agree that turning the pet into a shelter or re-homing it is a better solution than for the pet to be ignored, not cared for or discarded in an inhumane manner.

We have been remiss by not announcing that the 2012 State and Federal Combined Campaigns are underway.  These campaigns allow State and Federal employees to donate to charities of their choice and we certainly hope our shelter will be the ‘pick’ of many state and federal employees in our area!  If you are a State of Alabama employee, then you can donate to us through the State Combined Campaign and our Agency Code is 106803.  Federal employees (which includes active military) can donate to us through the Combined Federal Campaign and our Agency Code is 70006.  These campaigns are critical to non-profits and help make donating to deserving charities so easy as supporters can donate either one time or via monthly payroll deduction.  We want to thank everyone ahead of time for supporting our shelter and our animals!
