W. Gaines Smith inducted into Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame

W. Gaines Smith, retired director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and 4-H alumnus, was inducted into the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame March 19 at the Alabama 4-H and Youth Development Center in Columbiana. He was one of 24 inductees honored during special ceremonies at the Alabama 4-H Environmental Science Education Center. Smith was nominated by Alabama 4-H.

The Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame recognizes individuals and organizations that have had a significant effect on the 4-H Youth Development program, its members and leaders. The Alabama 4-H Club Foundation, Inc., and Alabama 4-H honors, remembers and pays tribute to those who influenced the lives of Alabama youth by their commitment "To Make the Best Better."

W. Gaines Smith is the only director of the Extension System or its predecessor, The Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, to have worked at every level of Extension in Alabama.

The Humane Society of Elmore County is a sheltering agency for animals from within Elmore County.  The responsibility for picking up animals, dealing with animal complaints and investigating cruelty/neglect cases falls upon the respective Animal Control Officers in each city and the county.         

     If you are in need of animal control assistance for a stray or problem animal, or to report instances of animal neglect or cruelty, you will need to contact the appropriate officer noted below.

Irrigation improvement bill becomes law

Gov. Robert Bentley signed the Irrigation Tax Credit Improvements bill into law Tuesday to encourage more farmers to install irrigation systems and construct reservoirs. Now, farmers can claim the irrigation tax credit over five years from the date a qualifying project is completed.

Alabama has approximately 120,000 acres of irrigated land, whereas Mississippi and Georgia have more than 1.5 million irrigated acres each. Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, said he hopes this legislation will make Alabama farmers more competitive and lessen the need for imported corn.
 
"Right now, we're importing corn from the Midwest," Orr said "Why can't we grow that corn here in Alabama with irrigated fields and higher yields and support our state's row crop farmers?

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP)- The federal agency that oversees Indian casinos has told Alabama's attorney general that tribal casinos can operate games that don't follow the state's definition of bingo.

AUM softball lands in top 5 for first time in program history

The Auburn Montgomery softball team jumped up three spots to No. 5 in the first NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll of the regular season, earning its highest ranking in the five-year history of the program.

The Warhawks had previously been as high as seventh, earning that spot in last season’s postseason rankings. AUM received 500 points in the poll, coming in 60 points behind top-ranked Concordia (Calif.). The Eagles (25-2) moved up from No. 5, receiving five first place votes.

Preseason No. 1 Cal State San Marcos leads the pack with eight first place votes. No. 3 Lee (five votes) and No. 4 Rogers State (three) also received support for the top ranking. Only 17 points separate the top four teams.

The Southern States Athletic Conference leads the nation with six teams represented in the poll. William Carey (No. 11), Brenau (No. 12), Belhaven (No. 18) and Mobile (No. 21) join the Warhawks and Lady Flames.

Montgomery Firefighter killed in officer involved shooting

ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) - The Elmore County Sheriff's Office has requested the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to look into the circumstances surrounding an officer involved shooting in Elmore County Tuesday night.

The ABI confirms Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin requested the ABI investigate the incident. The ABI's findings will be turned over to a grand jury.

Sheriff Franklin says an off-duty Montgomery firefighter, 34-year-old Jeremy Acre of Holtville was shot in the upper torso and killed by an Elmore County Sheriff's Deputy.

Franklin says two deputies were dispatched to the scene to shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday to conduct a welfare check at the home on Hogan Road in Holtville on reports of a domestic violence incident.

When the deputies approached the door they heard the sound of a gun being loaded. When deputies knocked on the door, Acre allegedly answered and was clearly agitated. He was told multiple times to drop the handgun he was holding.
