Special Report: Sinkhole Shock

One of the state's largest sinkholes is in Calera in Shelby County. It opened in the 1970s. It's now partially obscured by trees.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- It is a rare event, but it happens. The earth swallows a home, and in a worse case scenario, takes a life. That's what happened to a man in south Florida.

Richard Moultrie of Union Springs is concerned the same thing could happen to his mom. We found Moultrie shoveling up more dirt to fill-up 4 sinkholes underneath his mom's back deck.

"I'm mystified and upset about it. I don't know if I'm gonna wake up one morning and the whole back deck will be gone," Moultrie admitted.

What's gone, and apparently for good, is Richard's lawnmower. It disappeared 60 feet below.

"The whole lawnmower is gone, vanished," he explained.

J.P. Pouncey points to what appears to be a sinkhole in the making behind the apartment complex she manages in Prattville.

Thanks to Walmart and our fantastic Millbrook supporters our first Supply Drive of the year was a huge success as we received a huge amount of donated supplies and money to help our animals. These supply drives truly help as the money saved purchasing supplies can go to some of our special animals in need like Angela, a very sweet Spaniel mix, who recently started her heartworm treatment.  We are grateful to each of our volunteers for helping out and to everyone who donated items and money so generously.

Elmore Co. domestic dispute ends in death

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA)- A domestic violence situation ended in one death in Elmore County Friday morning.

Sheriffs responded to Luther Street in the Crenshaw Community around 8:00 a.m.,  where they found Michael Smith with a gun shot wound to his upper abdomen.  They got the call from Bridgette Johnson, who apparently had shot Smith.

Johnson claims that Smith was hitting her in the head with a hammer.  During the altercation she pulled out a 38 caliber gun and shot Smith in the upper abdomen.  She got away and drove down the road to the Cotton Lakes subdivision while on the phone with 911.

Smith died at a hospital about an hour later.

Both Smith and Johnson are known to the Elmore County Sheriff's office.  They shared children and had previously filed different reports against each other.

In July this case will be presented to the grand jury to determine any possible charges.
