Veterans observe anniversary of Pearl Harbor bombing Tuesday -- The Wetumpka Herald

Wetumpka’s annual Pearl Harbor observance will be held Tuesday at 10:55 a.m. in Gold Star Park. The event is a remembrance of the 69th anniversary of the Japanese bombardment of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii -- an attack which precipitated the United States’ entry into World War II.

Funeral for Elmore County hostage victim set

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - The funeral for a victim of a hostage situation that turned deadly will be held today in Elmore County. Friends and family will remember Haley Wingard, 17, who was shot and killed in a standoff between sheriff's deputies and her ex-boyfriend.

The service will be at the Thelma Baptist Church in Wallsboro. Visitation is at noon, the service will be at 2 p.m. Hayley will be buried at the cemetery across from the church.

Wingard died in an incident at a home on Taylor Hill Drive and Williams Road in the Wallsboro Community.

She was a senior at Wetumpka High School. The suspect, her ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Derrick Bean, was shot and killed by authorities immediately after Bean fired the shot that killed Wingard.

It has been another busy year at the shelter and while there are always the challenges of more animals coming to us than there are homes, we still have a lot to be thankful for. With the help of many wonderful supporters we have made a lot of improvements to the shelter this year such as:


Privacy Fence, Benches & a Storage Bldg for Play Yard – all thanks to Jacob Garnett who did this for his Eagle Scout Project in support of the shelter.

Retaining Wall Project thanks to Leadership ElmoreCounty who raised $4300 via The Fur Ball. Construction
by Cecil Malone and Brian Newton.

Parking Lot 100% graveled – funding from The Fur Ball & Shelter. Brian Newton Earthworks completed.

New & different type of Sewage Pump that finally seems to be working consistently.

Wetumpka HS student is Gatorade Ala. Player of the Year

CHICAGO, IL— In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, announced Jamal Golden of Wetumpka High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year.  Golden is the first Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Wetumpka High School.  

Edgewood Academy to offer Pre-K program -- The Wetumpka Herald

Edgewood Academy will begin offering a Pre-K Program for the 2011-12 school year. This program will be for children three and four years old. The program will run for the 175 day school year. Several options will be offered for parents.
