City receives complaints about dilapidated apartments | News

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA)- A Wetumpka resident finds deplorable conditions inside an apartment and wants out, days after signing the lease.  Our cameras found scores of dead bugs, drug paraphernalia, and on the walls, dried blood.

The tenant says the landlord promised to fix the issues, but didn't deliver. These apartments are located on North Bridge Street, right behind the historic First Presbyterian Church.

"He was supposed to have it move in ready, it wasn't move-in ready when I came in here," said Deborah Tyree, the tenant's mother.

She refused to let her son move in and now wants the landlord to repay their money. WSFA 12 News has learned other apartments nearby - owned by the same landlord - are also in poor condition.

"They need to be torn down. Why don't they make something for people that's rebuilt and healthy for them," Tyree said. "I'll tear these down in a heartbeat."

Neighbors in the area have also complained about crime and the dilapidated condition of the buildings.  Mayor Jerry Willis tells WSFA 12 News he is aware of the problems, and hopes a solution can be found soon.
