Caspari hearing delayed due to scheduling issue

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - A court hearing scheduled for an Elmore County murder suspect and his sister was delayed today after the court reporter was unable to attend the proceedings.

Josh Caspari and his sister Jessica were scheduled to appear in court today but that hearing was unexpectedly delayed. The court reporter was unable to attend, causing the delay.

Josh Caspari faces multiple charges relating to the February murder of Anna Cardwell. His sister, Jessica Caspari faces charges for allegedly trying to help her brother escape from jail by paying an inmate to smuggle hacksaw blades to her brother.

A new date for the hearing has not been set.

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - The sister of accused murderer Josh Caspari has been arrested and charged for trying to help get her brother out of jail.

According to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin, Jessica Caspari was arrested Tuesday and charged with promoting prison contraband and facilitating escape from a detention center.

Jessica Caspari allegedly paid an inmate at the Elmore County Jail $500 to smuggle pieces of a hacksaw blade to her brother, Josh Caspari, who is being held in connection with the February murder of Anna Cardwell.

Three plead guilty in two separate ID fraud schemes

Three defendants in separate cases involving the use of stolen identities to file fraudulent tax returns have pleaded guilty in the Middle District of Alabama, the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced today.

Crystal Sayles, of Montgomery County, Ala., pleaded guilty today to one count each of filing false claims, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft. She also agreed to the forfeiture of a Mercedes Benz as part of her plea agreement. Sayles was indicted on 36 different counts on Jan. 19, 2012. According to her plea agreement, between January 2010 and July 2011, Sayles and others were involved with the filing of at least 482 fraudulent tax returns using stolen identities. These returns sought at least $2,181,879 in tax refunds. All of the returns had been filed through a tax preparation business called Simmons Financial, which Sayles opened in the name of another individual in order to conceal her own involvement.

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - During the early hours of the morning, SWAT team members from a number of local, state and federal agencies executed 14 federal search warrants in Central Alabama - seven in Elmore County, two in Autauga county and five in Montgomery County.

Individuals from Elmore, Autauga and Montgomery Counties will face criminal charges as a result of the investigation.

The operation was the second phase of an investigation which involved the identification of suspected members of the "BLOODS" street gang who were allegedly operating a drug distribution organization in Elmore County, just outside of Wetumpka.

Authorities say cooperation of many local, state and federal agencies led to the successful identifications in a drug trafficking organization responsible for supplying drug dealers throughout Central Alabama.

Student removed after handgun found at Wetumpka Middle School

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - A student was removed from Wetumpka Middle School Wednesday morning after it was discovered that the student brought a weapon on campus.

According to an Elmore County School District spokesperson, two students reported to an administrator that another student had a weapon.  After further investigation, that statement was proved to be true and school officials say the situation was addressed "quickly."

According to the Wetumpka Police Department a 7th grade student was arrested after he was found to have a handgun. Police say this incident is still under investigation and no other information is available.

At this time classes are going as normal and everything at the school is quiet.

Elmore County man charged with sodomy, child sex abuse

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - An additional charge has been leveled against the Elmore County man who admitted to police that he fondled a young boy.

According to the Elmore County Sheriff's Office, authorities have now filed a charge of First Degree Sodomy against 24-year-old Joshua Ray Parton. Parton was arrested Wednesday on a charge of Sexual Abuse of a Child Younger than 12 after investigators say he fondled a 9-year-old boy living in his neighborhood.

Investigators say the abuse started in the Lightwood Community. The Sheriff added that the victim's family and Parton knew each other. The allegations came to light this week when the boy's father noticed a change in his son's behavior.

Parton is currently being held in the Elmore County Jail. His bonds total $90,000.
