Construction on Creek casino complex halted

Construction on Creek casino complex halted

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - Construction on a new 20-story hotel and casino in Wetumpka is being halted, but Mayor Jerry Willis says he's not concerned. "This is temporary," he said of the delay.

Leaders of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians agreed to stop the project after protests by the Muscogee Nation of Creek Indians, an Oklahoma tribe with connections to the land. The Native News Network reports that construction ended Tuesday at 5:00pm.

The Muscogee Nation objected to the $246 million project, which promises approximately 600 jobs, because it doesn't want the graves of its ancestors exhumed and moved.

Elmore County Night of Bands THIS WEEK!

Elmore County Night of Bands THIS WEEK!

The annual Elmore County Night of Bands, a showcase for the marching bands in all Elmore County schools, is coming to Tallassee this Thursday evening, September 27th, at 6:30 p.m. at J.E. “Hot” O’Brien Stadium in Tallassee.

Eclectic hosted the first Night of Bands in 2009.  In 2010 and 2011, the event was held at Hohenberg Field in Wetumpka.

“We are looking forward to hosting this fourth annual performance in Tallassee,” said Robby Glasscock, Director of Bands at Tallassee High School.  “Each of the schools has worked very hard to prepare a show for band competitions, so we have some band directors present who will be judging the bands and giving comments as if it were a true band contest.”

The Faulkner University band, organized in 2010, will be performing in exhibition.
