WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) - The City of Wetumpka is planning a New Year's Eve bash for Decemeber 31, 2011. The event will take place at the Elmore County Court House starting at 9:30pm.

The event will kick off with recognition of Prisoners of War or those Missing in Action.

At 10:00pm music will be provided by Khamera.

The city will take part in celebrating the NYC Ball Drop at 11:00pm followed by more music.

The night will culminate with the Centrat Time Zone's move into 2012 with an 11:59pm countdown for fireworks!

It has been nearly six decades since country music legend Hank Williams died, but his legacy is as strong as ever.

The Hank Williams Museum, along with the Oakwood Cemetery Annex, is hosting a commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the famed singer's death with a wreath laying service and live music on Sunday, January 1st. 

The wreath laying service will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Williams' grave site, which is located at the Oakwood Cemetery Annex.  Afterward, the memorial celebration will continue with live music until 2:00 p.m. at the Hank Williams Museum.

Hank Williams' grave site is located in the Oakwood Cemetery Annex at 1305 Upper Wetumpka Road in downtown Montgomery.

The Hank Williams Museum is located at 118 Commerce Street in downtown Montgomery.

Artists invited to enter the 2012 Waterfowl Stamp Art contest

Artists invited to enter the 2012 Waterfowl Stamp Art contest

Alabama artists are invited to enter the 2012 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp art contest, which opens January 1, 2012. The winning artwork will be used as the design of the 2013-2014 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp, which is required to be purchased when hunting migratory waterfowl. Entries will be accepted from Jan. 1 - Feb. 15, 2012. The competition is open to resident Alabama artists only.
 
All eligible entries will be on display February 24, 2012, at the Richard Beard Building, 1445 Federal Dr., Montgomery, Ala., 36107. Following the showing, three judges from the fields of art, ornithology and wildlife conservation will select the winning waterfowl art.
 
“Like the federal waterfowl stamp, revenues from the sale of Alabama stamps are used to procure, establish or improve migratory waterfowl habitat,” said N. Gunter Guy, Jr., Conservation Commissioner.

Cancer Wellness Foundation's annual book sale starts today!

The Cancer Wellness Foundation is once again sponsoring our Annual Books Are Fun Book Sale, at the Montgomery Cancer Center, 4145 Carmichael Road, 2nd Floor, Education Conference Room.

The fundraiser will take place Monday December 12th from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday December 13th from 7:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m.  Nowhere will you find a better value or variety of titles to please every type of reader, from kids to grandparents.  The sale also features a wide assortment of gift items.
 
Proceeds from the sale go to the Cancer Wellness Foundation, assisting Cancer patients in our area with expenses when they are either under- or un-insured. CWF staff help with medication, transportation, social services and nutritional needs.

Montgomery Youth Orchestra Winter Concert at MPAC this Saturday

The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre is hosting the Montgomery Youth Orchestra's Winter Concert this Saturday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m. 

The concert will feature a variety of music from both the classical and pops repertoires. The ensemble boasts nearly 90 junior and senior high school members from across the central Alabama area.

The Symphony League sponsors this concert and it is an excellent opportunity for young listeners to experience the excitement of a live orchestra concert.  This family friendly event is free and open to the public.

The 41st Annual Montgomery Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show is this weekend!

The Montgomery Gem and Mineral Society presents its 41st annual Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show.

The show is at the Garrett Coliseum and starts Friday and lasts until Sunday. Parking and admission are free and door prizes will be awarded!

Vendors will be on hand selling a variety of gem, mineral, rock, and fossil specimens.  There will also be vendors selling beads and jewelry, as well as equipment and supplies for jewelry making  and rock-hounding. The popular rock and mineral food table will be on display, too.

Come, look, enjoy...buy if you wish!

Garrett Coliseum is located at 1555 Federal Drive in Montgomery.  Show hours are:

Friday, December 2nd from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
