Wetumpka Depot Players to present ACTFEST13

Wetumpka, Al- October is known for fairs, football, fall weather and festivals. This year is will also be remembered for Fantastic Theatre as The Depot Players host for a fall festival of comedies, dramas and musicals all presented for ACTFEST13, the state community theatre festival October 26-28.  The Depot Players will play host for a fall festival of comedies, dramas and musicals all presented for ACTFEST13, the state community theatre festival October 26-28.   Community theatres from across the state and River Region will be producing a variety of plays throughout the weekend all on the Depot stage.  ACTFEST is in association with the Alabama Conference on Theatre, an umbrella organization that promotes theatre state wide.

Red Mountain Theatre Company (Birmingham, AL) and its Executive Director Keith Cromwell, in collaboration with Lee Sentell (Alabama Tourism Director) and Dr. Lawrence J. Pijeaux (President and CEO of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) are hosting a national search for a one-act written piece to be produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

The one-act theatrical presentation (play, musical or spoken word) will become the second act of a fully-realized theatrical event that features a first-act dramatic reading of the “Letter to Martin Luther King” by a group of clergymen and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” written during his incarceration in 1963. 

Submissions are due no later than September 1, 2012, and the winner will be announced on October 15, 2012.

Wetumpka Depot Players to hold audition for "Seeing Stars in Dixie"

Wetumpka, Al.- The Wetumpka Depot Players announce auditions for Ron Osborne’s, Seeing Stars in Dixie on August 13 and 14th at 7pm. Directed by Kim Mason, show dates are October 4-6, 11-14, and 18-20, 2012.

Set in 1956, all of Natchez, Mississippi is abuzz that Hollywood's brightest stars, Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor, have arrived to film Raintree County! Meanwhile at Clemmie's Tea Room, the widowed movie-buff proprietress with a secret admirer oversees her own cast of characters: Tootie, her take charge friend; Jo Beth, a former beauty queen; Glease, a man more comfortable with women than with macho men; and Marjorie, an unethical social climber. Competition for a small role in the movie brings out the best and worst of these memorable characters. Twists, turns and revelations lead Clemmie to trade a moment of fame for love and the chance to impact the lives of people dear to her.

The Capri Theatre and APT present 'The Durrs of Montgomery'

The Capri Theatre will host the premiere of Alabama Public Television's newest documentary, The Durrs of Montgomery.  The screening will take place on Friday, June 22nd at 7:30 p.m., and will include a Q&A session with director Andrew Grace.  This event is free and open to the public.

Clifford Durr (1899-1975) was an Alabama lawyer who played an important role in defending activists and others accused of disloyalty during the New Deal and McCarthy eras, and who represented Rosa Parks in her challenge to the constitutionality of the ordinance requiring the segregation of passengers on buses in Montgomery that launched the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Virginia Foster Durr shared these ideals with her husband. A civil rights activist and lobbyist, Virginia Durr was close friends with Rosa Parks and Eleanor Roosevelt.
